Treo 650, Verizon and the Data Plan

Hi everyone,

I am thinking about buying a Treo 650 (used) for the Verizon network. I have one question however.

Can I use the Treo 650 without Verizon's data plan? Can I use the phone without it? I do not plan to surf the web or check email. I just want a PDA that's a cell phone. As long as I a not using web, email, etc, should I expect any "data" charges on my bill?

Thanks in advance.

it looks like I need the data plan but will need to buy the pay as you go which does not have a montly charge.

So, now I need to ask this. If I only use the phone for

1. making voice phone calls
2. checking, adding, modifying my calendar entries and contacts
3. syncing via the "hardwire" cable (sync to outlook)
4. using Blazer ONLY to use AvantGo (which I will only sync when physically connected to my PC)

Is there any way possible that the phone will "secretly" use the pay as you go data plan? I will never use the internet nor check email using the phone.

If the phone does make secret connections, is there anyway I can shut it down permenently so I can sleep well at night knowing my bill will not be astronomical?

Thanks in advance!

As long as you don't install any third party software which uses the data connection you should be fine

You can request a "national data access block" from verizon, which will disable your ablility to connect to their data services. This will ensure that you don't accidentally use any data, nor will any third party apps be allowed to connect.

Their is one issue, however. Any MMS messages are delivered thru data access. You will still be able to send/receive SMS, but NOT MMS.

Hope this helps.

Would they give you any grief for requesting the "national data access block"? I Have heard of some posters saying that the sales people will attempt to tell yo that is not possible. Has anybody done this successfully without getting the secret data stuff pushed thru unknowungly? I am about to receive my unit in the next couple of days and I need some fighting words whenever I approach the Verizon's rep. BTW, I will me getting the 700 w. Thanks for your input.
