You know, I saw you mention that in another post/thread. I searched Windows Media for an option on how to change that. For the love of all things, I couldn't find it. Maybe I saw it and just didn't understand it.

Its variable vs constant bit rate. If you rip in variable bit rate you can set a range, but not pick exactly the bit rate you wish to use.

MarcB is on a distinguished road
I just bought 'Phone Technician' (a steal for only $15), and now everything seems to work fine...so whatever the issue was, Phone Technician solved it

People actually use Windows Media Player to rip music? That's very strange... I use iTunes on Windows, and while I do have an iPod or 3, even before I had them, I used it. I prefer it's layout and options for music playing. I only use WMP for watching videos.

skoenig has a spectacular aura aboutskoenig has a spectacular aura about
For what its worth I use Audiograbber for ripping (free) then Tag&Rename (paid for but worth it I think) for fixing up all the tags and album art.

It's a two stage process (rip then fully tag) I suppose but I have total control over the file names, tags and album art with zero memory over head and only 12 megs of hdd space for the software.

Plus my folders look like this natively in XP with no Media Player mad-file-name craziness necesary.

I have most music on another machine so I drag what I want my notebook or mp3 player. Yes I own the music which I buy from cdwow or URGE.

Funny though everyone has their way of doing things don't they? Maybe I'm just really anal about my files and how they're organized.

Personal feelings, I haven't owned nor will I ever own and I-pod. I know you guys are going to rip me apart for that. But, I have a pesonal feeling on that. So, I will stick to Window Media. I will have to get down and dirty. Now-a-days, I just download all my music. So ripping is not important.

Used to own an iPod, beautiful as it was, then discovered the wall garden of babylon that it is. And realised that all that beauty didn't really mean much to me in the bodgy glover and backpack I had it in, what matter was occassionally be able to listen to radio, hacking it, battery life (always for got to take out and charge it) and not being able to record audio on it.

Sold it and chose an iriver because it had a radio, could record and has a 12 hours battery life. It was also a ton cheaper and had the kind of looks I wasn't proud of but then I also didn't worry about scratching it.

Did I mention I just dragged and dropped files to and from it on any of my machines? That made a big difference to me. Probably the biggest of all.

Freedom.

Then my Treo came along and had pockettunes ever since.

However I do love the ipod and things Apple design, iTunes is a great platform for selling music and good music manager it's just a bit slow for me and insisted in shuffling my music away into the depths of an purposefully obsfucated (sp?) naming system never to be seen again.

As other have pointed out M$ MP11 is pretty good too, I does a nice line in file management, pretty well with auto tagging and has a huge variety of stores built in.

I use zen, my wife and two children have them. I love the "click and drage" feature. Like skoenig said, that in itself, was reason to choose it over ipods. Then again, I wasn't going to fork out $400 for an ipod.

I like the freedom to be able to put a song in however I want to, when i want to. (Ipods are to me like Verizon Long Distance is to Skoenig).
