Unlocked Cingular Treo 650 Update question

I just want to clear up some confusion I was having, I unlocked my Cingular Treo 650, so does this now qualify as a Unlocked GSM Treo and I should use the update http://www.palm.com/us/support/downl...sm.html#before

Or am I supposed to run the Cingular updates, I am sure this has been asked a million times. I did a quick search and I just wasnt lucky. Thanks

Thats a very good question, and one I haven't thought of before. I sent an email to Palm support asking this, and I will post their reply when I get an answer.

I guess that depends on who you're using as a carrier, if it's still Cingular then the firmware upgrade for their phones would have all the correct settings in whereas the unlocked one may not.

Here's the reply I got from Palm Support:

I understand that you need to know on what particular Treo 650 Updater should you install on your smartphone. If your phone is originally locked to Cingular network, then you will need to install the Treo 650 Updater for Cingular. Please be informed that our updater is Carrier specific and you can’t use any other updater version that is unidentifiable by your smartphone.

Please be reminded also that there is a tendency that your Treo 650 would behave as a locked phone again, if you plan to install the Treo 650 updater from Cingular. The Treo 650 Updater will not re-lock an unlocked smartphone, but it will override any ROM updates that make a locked smartphone appear to be unlocked. So, be sure that you have the official unlock code from Cingular just incase your smartphone will go back to its locked state.

Or you may refer back to the store were you bought the smartphone and let them install the Treo 650 Updater for Cingular. If in case it will return to the lock state, it wont be hard for you to request from them directly to unlock again the smartphone.

Prior to installing the updater, you may want to verify on your own the current software version on your device, as this will also help you in identifying the correct updater. To obtain the Phone Info of your Treo 650 smartphone, kindly follow the instructions below:

Viewing the Phone Info screen on a Treo smartphone
The Phone Info screen can tell you your phone number, serial number, IMEI or ESN number, Software version number and other helpful information. Here's how to access the Phone Info screen:
  1. Press Phone.
  2. Check that your radio (phone) is active. If “Wireless Mode Off” is displayed, turn on the radio by pressing the radio power button (Red button at the right side on top of the keyboard).
  3. Press Menu button.
  4. From the Options menu, select Phone Info.
  5. On the Phone Info screen, look for the Software item and HS SN for Serial number. This will tell you which version of the Treo 650 Updater you need to download. Note: The 'x.xx' in the Software Version stand for any numbers. Compare the version on your Phone Info screen with the table found in the link below:

Hope this helps!

Ok, but what if you don't want to?

I'm in the same boat, except that I would rather install Palm's update for an Unlocked 650. My phone was originally a Cingular phone, but I'd like to use the unbranded software. Is there any way to do that? I've been looking around, but I can't seem to find this. Thanks for your help.

Wow, okay... So I might've found the information I need in this PDF...

http://discussion.treocentral.com/at...3&d=1143559945

...but it certainly looks like I'm in for a lot of work. Has anyone tried the methods described in that document? Will they work? Is this the best way to go about what I'm trying to accomplish?

I'm probably going to try regardless of if anyone replies, and if it works, I'll be back to let you all know.
