can you not contact verizon and tell 'em you don't want that particular part of your package? cingular lets you add or take away what you want (for a fee, of course).

I agree. There's usually a netless option in the packages available.

I'm curious however how you managed to rack up $25 in data charges which seems quite a lot, did Verizon explain that to you to your satisfaction? If not I highly recommend you go back to them and have them send you the services you used... it may be that you're doing something that they class as data even if it doesn't appear to be...or even that they made a mistake in which case you may get a refund.

Whenever you receieve an MMS the data connection stays open. This is a default setting that VZW left on for some reason. If open, the connection will transfer data to test the connection. I ended up setting my Netork setting to be a bluetooth profile. I can't send and recieve data but I can still text which is all I want.

fixed

Okay, I have figured out what works for me on this issue.

When my wife was sending me pictures my phone would log onto a data network just like going online or the net. And this would stay open until the phone was shut off?

After going back and checking why I was being charged for this via Verizon.
Believe it or not, a session that was logged onto the data network for as little as 5 minutes was charged a whopping $17.00. Just for one picture to be sent from my wife’s LG cell phone. Beware of this.

So I have set my network pref’s to link onto an unknown data server.
I changed it to “rip off” (i.e. Verizon) and now if my wife tries to send me a picture it will not connect to the data link-up! And I cannot go online with out changing it back to the org. network settings. No more hidden charges.

And I can still send and receive text messages (MMS) with no problems.

This how I did it-
1.PREFS-
2.Communications / NETWORK
3.Service / UNTITLED / Username / rip off

No password needed.
Save.

Cheers, 808man

I have a Treo 650 with Bell, on CDMA, and "unlimited" data usage and data time. It's expensive, so I'm trying to see if I can limit usage. I set email preferences/connection to autodisconnect, and timeout, and if I use the web I make sure to do a disconnect either in Blazer via page/doscinnect, or on the main screen via preferences/ntwork/disconnect. But I still see chunks of packet data connect time -like 500-100 minutes at a time. But not a lot of data - fractions of MB. I also get SMS text messages periodically, but I don't think that is keeping the connection there - how would I tell?

Periodically check above your signal strength indicator for the little green arrows indicating a data connection. Check a few minutes after you get an SMS to see if the connection is still open, and after you do other things to see if you are initiating a connection unintentionally.
