![]() | Syncing the Palm PRE and Privacy/Security Not to raise a red flag here but does anyone think it is absurd to sync "all" your data with a "For Profit" 3rd party service like Google or the like? Sure the option is nice, but frankly, and perhaps like some of you, the only place I'd like to store my contacts, addresses, etc. is my computer, period! I think it is crazy that more people haven't reflected on this. While even I know that privacy is a mute issue when it comes to email as viewing it is possible at the ISP level, the last thing I want to be is a sieve of information not just for me but for all of my contacts to a 3rd party service for profit like Google. As for Facebook, how many Facebook accounts have been hacked!? I use it as a form of entertainment and not a suppository of contacts, even though it does in effect behave as one in a limited degree. I think the clear point here is that a solution IS NECESSARY for syncing data with the desktop PERIOD! This is both for privacy and security. Short of exchange support which supports privacy and security in transfer protocols (something the iphone wasn't capable of doing until most recently with the release of the iphone 3Gs yesterday), it seems that exchange is the only option for getting your info on the Palm Pre with any level of security. I am curious to hear your perspectives? |

![]() | I myself am of the same thought, not to keen on the whole Cloud thing. Only want my info on my computer not on some server somewhere. Waiting to see how this pans out. There are third parties making programs that will allow you to keep syncing to the Palm Desktop. The one downside to this is that Palm will probably be phasing out the Desktop. Although they sure haven't updated it in a long time anyway. I am really beginning to think this is the last Palm I will ever have. ![]() |

![]() | privacy versus convenience Ok first of all in my humble opinion those who think there is anything truly private on the web need to have there heads examined. Privacy features aside anything can be hacked, social engineered, or subpoenaed in court. That being said it is simply convenient and relatively secure to use google. yes it can be hacked or social engineered but anyone who wants your contacts that badly can get it anyway by targeting you or your machine or a public machine you use specifically witha keystroke logger. My choice. sync with the cloud only basic cotact info. Mark those things you want to keep private as private in outlook or palm desktop and they won't sync. Then sit back and wait for a privacy solution on the pre akin to desktop privacy features. |
