Should Palm abandon its next OS in favor of Google's Open Handset Alliance - Treo Forum

Now that Google has announced a new OS for mobile phones, shouldn't Palm simply drop is long overdue next generation of the Palm OS and consider adopting Google's new Android OS?

Palm wants to be in charge, at least partially of their OS. Thanks for bringing this up though. I look forward to seeing what this Google phone OS can do.

Why would they want to? They would have no control over the development of the OS and would be in direct competition with other companies who can produce cheaper models with little to differniate between them. If Palm want to regain the position they once held then they need to control both hardware and software to make the perfect synergy, much like Apple has done with the iPhone.

It may find it's way onto other devices such as GPS units or UMPCs but it will primarily be a phone OS.

It's actually a software platform, i.e. the OS, apps and development tools. Everything you need, software wise, to produce a smartphone

Palm has been screwing around and doing everything but deliver the often-promised Linux-based next-gen OS. Now they say late 2008 which means 2009 at the earliest.

Actually the most recent news is that the new Palm Linux OS won't be ready until mid-2009.
