Palm Centro / 500P coming to AT&T! - Treo Forum

Gear Diary have got hold of a picture of what looks lke a Centro but branded for AT&T. The article states it's the Treo 500P and there's a Treo logo at the top, but the form factor is identical to the Centro's. Only different would be that this is a GSM phone rather than CDMA.

I doubt it's 3G as that's not supported by PalmOS. Could make the 680 EOL though

While this may be valid, Sprint has it exclusively through Christmas as the Centro. Just an FYI, not trying to burst anyone's bubble. Maybe Santa will give money for a purchase though, huh?

Yes, but this is the Treo 500p. It could be a clever way for Palm to get around that exclusivity.

Now what makes you say that Palm OS doesn't support 3G Taz? If it supports EVDO (Rev A in the 755p?) would it not support HSDPA/UMTS?

It's something that's been debated greatly and comes down to PalmOS not being a multi-tasking OS. This is required to support simultaneous voice and data, a feature of HSDPA. I suppose they could bodge it so you have either voice or data but retain the higher speed, but then they could have done that with the 680. EVDO is different in that the version on the 700P/755P doesn't support simultaneous voice or data. This is based on what I've read, I'm no expect in these matters

It is a little unusual for Palm to release two identically numbered devices with significant hardware differences. Now, the Treo 500v recently available in Europe is a non-touchscreen WM6 device. If the 500p is in fact a a GSM Centro, would it have a touchscreen? Despite the advances in navigation keys the Palm OS can still make good use of it...

There have been rumours of a non touchscreen version of PalmOS but I would be very surprised if the 500P, assuming such a beast exists, would be a non touchscreen model.

A note regarding the hardware similarities and differences between the Treo 500 (WM) and the Centro (PalmOS). A couple of days ago in Switzerland I had a chance to see side by side these two devices. Despite the similar cosmetic lineage, they are very different beasts; the 500 is quite a bit larger - something that does not come across when these machines are shown separately. And by the way, I bought the Centro (cannot find them here in Canada, and the US ones are locked) and I love it!
