Something I would like a treo 800 to do

With all this talk about newer treo's on the horizon, something I would like to see is Wi-Fi, but not just wi-fi for accessing a faster internet connection. I would like to see wi-fi as a VoIP solution, where if you are in wi-fi range the signal seemlessly hands off from the cell network to the Wi-fi network. (or in cases where people don't have cell reception, like in buildings or out in BFE, a wi-fi signal would cover that)

Other phones are getting ready to do this, it would make sense for a treo to.

Add to that the list:

Linux on the Treo
At least 320 x 320 screen (or better), and make it bigger maybe?
Better memory (maybe flash memory?)
Better Battery
Broadband internet speeds

oh and give it the ability to make me an icecream sundae covered in hot fudge and whip cream..... hold the cherry please.

These are things all Treo users want. I'm pretty happy with WM, but there are days where I want Palm OS.

I'd be happy with using the Spectec WiFi card in my 750, but then I don't have any removable storage.

In the process of selling my 650s. It hurts but at least they'll be getting used.

Unlikely whilst Palm's main customer is the carriers

Palm needs to get its head out of its arse. Nokia is already jumping on the WiFi VoiP hybrid cell phones (which I'm sure there are PDA phones in the works for this too).

*gives palm a swift kick in the butt* Did it work?

Yes but Nokia are a European manufacturer who work in a different way. Being mostly GSM means you can buy the phone and then stick whoevers SIM card into it. The main two US carriers are CDMA which means you pretty much have to buy the phone from the carrier. Palm being American built their business around working directly with the carriers, so to some degree the carriers call the shots.

A big part of the problem is that Palm really started to fade a while ago, so they had less power to influence these things. If the Blackberry never caught on, then Palm might be in a better position.

A big problem for Palm is that they don't really market their products, so you get fewer people really wanting one. You see Motorolla and Samsung advertised continually, but you NEVER see Palm advertising. And with the 680 and the other newer Treos, it would be VERY easy to gain a LOT of attention(just pointing out that if you want a phone with a few PDA features, you can go with some other brand, but if you want a REAL PDA with tons of applications available plus a phone and with Google Maps, go with a Palm).

If Palm were to re-gain their old strength, then they could throw in features and the cell phone companies wouldn't be able to force Palm to leave out features, because too many people would be demanding their products.

It's not just Palm, other manufacturers like Samsung, Nokia etc have had features either removed or disabled at the request of the carriers. It's one of the reasons people like unlocked phones, no carrier branding or restrictions

I agree. Get some good advertising going and we could see some changes in the wind. Of late they seem a little more in tune to the advertising thing (new sites dedicated to new products) and hopefully once the new OS is out we will see some broad and targeted advertising.

I could NOT agree with you more on the advertising!

So many more people would be pleased with what a Treo provides if they knew more about it and could truly compare it to what is available w/o feeling like they have the get what everyone else has.

And frankly, a few complaints or wish lists from non-techie "regular" folks might light a fire under Palm to address deficiencies in the Treos that have affected all.
