Need advice: 700p vs. 700w?

Hi all-
This will be my first time purchasing a Treo, and I'm not sure whether to go with the 700p or the 700w. I've been told that the P is Palm based, and the W is Windows based, but I'm still not sure what exactly that means.

It's primarily for personal use at this point (bluetooth for the car, some internet use, address/ date book).

Any advice? Information?

Thanks!

What carrier are you going to be using.

Sprint or Verizon

Given your usage description, either would fit the bill. It would probably be best to try them both out in the store to see if you prefer the interface of one over the other. The screen on the 700p is a little higher resolution. The 700w (or rumored to be 700xw for Sprint) supports using a WiFi card which the 700p does not.

I have the 700p and it works great for me. I upgraded from the Treo 600, so I chose to stick with the Palm OS based 700. I've used a Windows Mobile device (Sprint PPC6700), but I really didn't like the Windows interface. I'm of course biased since I've used a Palm OS device for the past few years.

Gigan, I too am biased but would recommend the palm based phone. From all I've heard the windows based version is really crap. Just my 2 cents.I have been carrying around a palm for 2 years now and love it, even if the 700p does have a few kinks to work out.

Thanks for your responses and advice- I've used Palm devices as well for several years, so I'd imagine I would adapt readily to the 700p.

I like the tip about comparing them side by side- which I can hopefully do in a few weeks when the 700xw comes out.

We use the 700p and 700w at work, so I support both models for our field users. The general feedback I get is that the 700p is preferred, because of the Palm Desktop Software. Should a crash ever occur OR if you upgrade, all of your settings/critical data are readily available as long as you've done a HotSync.

When I upgraded from the 650 to the 700p, I was suprised to find that after a single HotSync with my computer, my new 700p inherited ALL of the settings I had for my 650 (ringer tones, power settings, color settings, etc.). That got me up and going even quicker on the new phone.

For the people who use the 700w in my environment, the other IT people have lots of negative comments and feelings towards any Windows PDA. I don't use one daily, but I do the setup for each new one in my company.

I too am biased. I've used Palm stuff for 6 years now.

Car Nut, that info helps tremendously. It's good to read about a first hand comparison between the models.

Thanks!

I purchased the 700wx last week. Today I am returning the phone (at lunch)for a 700p. The windows based palm stinks. I used the Palm and it is much user friendly.

Good luck

Whatever you do, do *******NOT******* waste time with the 700wx.

I've been a loyal Palm user for years. Had the opportunity to get the 700series and thought it would be cool to get the 700x for the alleged better multi-media.

OMG what a freaking NIGHTMARE!!

I spent the months of December thru February trying to get that piece of crap W5 to do what my (new) 700p did in 1 **DAY**.

Ask me how many freezes I've had on the 700p in a month. ZERO. And how many on the 700wx? About 5 or 6 a **DAY**.

No contest. More apps. Much more stable. Easy brainless conversion.

(My bf is still using his wx so we have a running debate... so far I'm up by about 3 gazillion points!)
