Agreed. Everyone who has asked me about my Treo says "Is that a blackberry".
It's become a household name, but the Treo name is like a very distant, unseen cousin.

A friend got a BB which inspired me to see what BB and competitors had to offer. I got a 700p which met my needs the best: push email, qwerty keypad, web browsing, connection speed, software selection and still functions as a phone.

I'm not to happy about the freezes and crashes which seem almost unheard of in the BB world. If Palm can fix some of the 700p's "features" in the patch this could be a very powerful device. Until then it is a jack of all trades but a master of none.

It's been stated numerous times in numerous threads, but it's worth repeating... The vast majority of freeze and crash problems on PalmOS devices are not the cause of core PalmOS itself, but the myriad of third-party applications people install on thier Treos. I've had freeze-and-crash issues since my original Pilot... and it can always be traced to a single, poorly behaved, third-party application.

The vast majority of Blackberries are deployed by corporate IT infrastructure. They are often locked and controlled from a central location. The applications installed on them are minimal-to-nonexistant or rigourously tested and closely monitored by IT professionals. There simply aren't opportunities for most users to make a mess of it.

The exact same thing happens with Windows and Mac machines, but that's a conversation for another environment...

At the same time, many of the problems with the 700p may be associated with the carrier. Many users have stated that they have issues with their devices, even when they are new and have only the factory applications installed. Some of these issues may be directly related to 3rd party applications added to the ROM by the provider, while others may stem from the provider "crippling" certain aspects of the OS in an attempt to generate more money. We have yet to receive any kind of update to address these issues, and we may never know for sure. While other devices in the Treo line have had their problems (they're computers, and they will have problems) most are easily fixed.

This, right here, is the answer.

Can anyone direct me on how to fix these freezes on 700p?

Okay, let's say I have an extra few hours to FIX MY D*#N PHONE, how do I tell which 3rd party app is causing the problem, or IF it is causing a problem?
The apps I have are: 2Day, 4Cast, Watchmaker, eKey and eData programs for real estate (opens doors, searches MLS, etc.)from Supra, Google Maps, Graffiti Anywhere (someone gave me this and I can't work it...does anyone like it?), mVoice, VolumeCare, VoiceMemo (how is this different from mVoice?).
I want to add some more apps such as Pocket Tunes Deluxe, and the PicKey app, and the new MemoPad. But I don't want the freezes/crashes to get worse.
I wish I could dial using voice command over Bluetooth, but since my bt only works some of the time, this would be more frustrating than helpful.
Thanks,
Karen

I've owned both and they both have their advantages and disadvantages. Love the BB concept, but my wireless provider wants to charge me an additional $40/month for mandatory BB service--and push e-mail isn't that important to me. Therefore, the Treo works quite nicely, thank you very much.

Angry Ex Blackberry user going crazy - help???

Have recently left corporate life and bought a Treo instead of a Blackberry, the phone/PDA device approved by my former employer. I went for the Treo because I imagined ( naively ) it would be a more sophisticated PDA than the BB which is really just an email forwarding/synchronisation tool. I was reasonably happy with my Treo until I connected it to Outlook/Vista via my laptop. Since I have done so I can't access my Inbox - I can only access the last message that was downloaded when I synched with Vista; I can't send or receive mail without synching directly with my laptop. In short the email facilities of Treo ar far inferior to the Blackberry - so much so that I am thinking of trashing my Treo and getting a BB Pearl. As to the Palm and Microsoft Mobile Device Centre websites - they are absolutely hopeless. Only a caped Treonaut crusader can help me. Ijust don't have enough time to spare to waste the time I am currently wasting to get this thing to be half way ( no a quarter of the way ) as useful as a Blackberry.

So what happens when you initiate a send/receive on the Treo?

I have been a blackberry user for about 5 years. I started with the old skool 6230 and went up from there.
Recently I dropped the Blackberry 8700c for a Treo 700wx because my work was willing to pay for it and we have to support other 700's.
I think both devices offer some serious advantages over the other. Try not to read too much into these. In my opinion PDA/Smartphones are a devices that are designed to accomplish a task and if you are a Treo user or a Blackberry user and your device does what you need then it's doing what it's designed to do. The general statement that Treos are better than Blackberries will never be solved by a bunch of people bickering about it on a forum.

8700 Advantages
- It's easier to navigate when you are distracted. To me it takes alot less attention to accomplish tasks on the Blackberry than it does on the Treo. This is probably due to the fact that the Treo is touch screen and it's keyboard short cuts are a little clumsy.
- Much faster than the treo when opening programs and doing things. The Windows platforms in all of its variations have always been memory hogs and it shows when multi tasking. Considering the Blackberry doesn't really allow multitaksing, it's a non-issue. Huge benefit of a blackberry
- Java based platform means there are LOTS of 3rd party programs out there to use. I know java can be installed on the treo but it's cumbersome to do and cumbersome to run.
- there are simply more blackberry resources out there. not to bash this forum, it's probably one of the best out there, but there are many more online resources for Blackberry.

Treo Advantages
- Multimedia in all of it's forms in my opinion is much better with the Treo. Keep in mind I was an 8700 guy and never got into the Pearl
- wireless sync with outlook (we have owa and oma) is seamless w/ the treo. big asset here. the fact that i can enter in a calendar item and walk away from my computer and have it show up on my device a few min later is great.
- related to the previous item, the general windows integration is sweet. It's nice i can open most Microsoft products right on my device without extra programs. this is a huge asset and one of the top traits that separates treo's from the blackberry

these are some of the notable benefits. again don't dwell on this. it's just my opinion.
I guess i can't say for sure which i prefer more...
I was for all intensive purposes a Blackberry power user before i switched over to the Treo
I learned most of the tips and tricks for a blackberry and I was ready for something new.
so i guess i'm netural on which i prefer but i'm eager to learn more about the 700wx
hope that helps those that are on the fence!
