Disable all sounds except the ringer?

I just moved from a circa-2003 Samsung E105 clamshell phone to a Centro. Save for web browsing, the Centro is really decent. The one issue I have is that I hate.. *hate*.. excess noise. The E105 could be configured to make no sounds whatsoever, except for the ringer. This Centro makes noise when I move between icons, turn it off, and other strange places I can't recall to enumerate.

I figured out how to disable the camera shutter sound and set the ringer to start with vibrations. And I'm aware of the "mute" switch on the top of the device, though that has the effect of killing the ringer as well.

Is there some more granular way to configure these sounds, or some third party program that would help? Also, is there a way to choose what noise the phone makes when it receives a text message?

Welcome to the forum alexdi!

I agree with you on the excess sound thing. First, use your menu key:
Menu>Options>Sound Preferences

Next, use the 'Applications' drop-down & select "System". If you select "OFF" for 'System Volume' this will stop the sounds everytime you press a key, switch between screens, etc. Similarly, you can use the drop-down to change your sound prefs for ring tones, phone alerts, calendar, messaging.

Thanks jstant, I was also wondering why I couldn't find a "Key Beep" or similar setting but hadn't gotten around to doing anything about it.

Psst jfa, it was Jstant, not Cartogary. Unless, unbeknown to me, they are one and the same.

I'm not sure I'm finding the section you're referring to. In particular, I can't seem to find "system volume". The options screen that the menu key brings up only lets me change whether I wanted icons listed or not. The "Sounds & Alerts" application is all I see under the System menu that relates to sounds, and it only appears to have ringer controls.

An unrelated question: I recently installed a number of applications. The phone feels more sluggish than it did earlier. Even opening the Phone application results in about a second of white. I'm unfamiliar with how the Palm OS works, or how to really exit applications. I thought I could just install things and run them on demand, and nothing would slow down. Is there some sort of tutorial on this?

Thanks for your help!

You may want to download a program called Reconfig. It will allow you to turn off all the sounds you don't like. It's one of my favorite programs because I can't stand all those sounds either. It's freeware and you can get it in the download section at mytreo.net.
