different software with the same function on treo?

Hi Everyone,
I'm still new to the Treo 755p, I've had it about a month and have been building my 'software library'. Is it bad or not advised to have 2 different software installed with overlapping functions?

For example, I have card keeper, but later added Safeguard. Both have the 'mount sd card' funtion checked. Should I uncheck one or delete 1 app? At the moment the Treo is working well...

Similarly, sort of...I have nvbackup and safeguard, but additionally I was looking for a way to just keep my registration codes backed up separately. Can I use something like reset dr. just for that with the other programs that I have or is it a bad idea?

Sorry if this seems like a silly question, but I'm still 'getting my head' around all of this

Thanks in advance.

Hi Tmord,

If you have SafeGuard, you don't need Card Keeper. You can delete that one. Its not so stable on the 755p anyway. You should uncheck SafeGuard from being backed up in NVBackup. Other then that those two apps should be fine together. If you want to save and protect your registration codes you can get a freeware app like YAPS and it will keep them there. If you are talking about saving preferences, yes Reset Doctor and TealScan will do that. Although I found that TealScan really slows the system down when it does that.

Thanks Stu,
One question, I couldn't figure out how to set Nvbackup to not back up safeguard. Do you do this by unchecking 'backup safeguard' in the safeguard program settings? One other quick question on NV--what exactly does cycle time mean, I have mine set to '3' and my backups seem to occur with no problem, but I randomly chose this setting.

Thanks again!

Tmord,

Its been a long while since I've used NVBackup, so perhaps someone else can give you better instructions there. The reason I made the recommendation about not backing up SafeGuard is twofold. First, SafeGuard has an internal mechanism that backs itself up when you exist the program. Second, other backup programs seem to have issues with SafeGuard and seem to be jealous of it. Seriously, Jeff Gibson stated that many of the backup programs were not written to Palm specifications for accepting notifications that a program like SafeGuard uses. Subequently the backup may freeze or cause a reset. The easiest way around it, is to just go into the backup program and set SafeGuard to not be backed up. Don't do anything with SafeGuard, except to make sure you have the most recent version (Jeff recently mentioned that 2.8 was going to be released some time this week). Anyone who can help with NVBackup?

Stu

I wanted to join in this thread to ask basically the same question but about different programs.

I was talking to someone that has SafeGuard and Reset Doctor on his Treo. I already have SafeGuard installed as a trial version but he insisted that I should have both Safeguard and Reset Doctor on my Centro.

Is there a reason why I should or should not have both on my Centro and if only one of them, which one is the better of the two?

I have both apps on my device, but not by design. I had purchased Reset Doctor before SafeGuard came out. If I were to choose today, I would only purchase SafeGuard. Reset Doctor tells you what app was running in the foreground when a crash occurs, SafeGuard will tell you which app was running in both the foreground and the background and give you the probability of which app caused the crash.

There are many differences between the two apps, however. Reset Doctor offers cache management enabling you to clear the cache at a certain point of your choosing (whereas the Palm devices will clear themselves when the cache gets too low - but it might be in the middle of you doing something). SafeGuard does not offer this feature. On the other hand, some developers argue against the whole idea of cache clearing because they believe it could cause problems.

The one feature that Reset Doctor has that makes me keep it on my device is that it saves preferences, through its autobackup (although there are other apps that will also do this - OnGuard Backup from Northglide for example). Nonetheless, this feature has saved by butt a number of times during crashes. While most backup programs will also backup preferences, theyare set to a pre-scheduled time and if you made any changes in preferences in between backups, then you'll lose them. In addition, Reset Doctor, will restore those preferences automatically. Of course, it then brags about how it saved you.

SafeGuard, on the other hand, does a number of things well. It tells you which apps you have on your device that operate in the background or have alarms. It has different colored running men to signify which background apps are currenty active, which ones have been active in the background in the past, and which ones appear to be unlocked and may need locking. It also gives you an event performance log, to examine how the app is performing. You can quarantine troublesome apps, or apps that may interfere with another app (such as Lightspeed). It provides the cash log as described above and a reset log (pretty much the same as Reset doctor) and it has options for monitoring palm, phone, and alarm events, and keeping the SD card mounted (to potentially avoid the inivisble SD card problem).

In short, SafeGuard is much more sophisticated then Reset Doctor. Particularly when it comes to their primary function, which is to protect you against resets. My device has become much more stable since getting SafeGuard. A case could be made for buying both, but if you had to buy one or the other, I would pick SafeGuard.

Thanks Stuart, you confirmed my thoughts. Both seem to offer nice capabilities and I am contemplating on purchasing both since I can get a discounted version of Reset Doctor through Centronauts.

I don't think NV provides for excluding something on a backup. It has a selective restore but not on backup.
