Problem with usernames and synching my 680

I successfully installed my supplied Palm Desktop App on VISTA to be used with my new unlocked 680. The user name on my 680 is apparently the default "PALM" but I first chose a device username for the device as "raydeeeo" which is what I used with a previous Treo. I get a message during the sych process.."The device you are attempting to sync with your computer is already using the "PALM" username. You have chosen to configure with the "raydeeeo" username. This could lead to unwanted data on your P.C. or device. (You may need to dismiss a warning on your device as well as the view log message on your P.C. before proceeding with the sync. Do you want to continue with the sync?"
On my first attempt, I chose "yes" and it synched to give me a contact list that I began on my previous device. I edited the username to "PALM" on the Desktop app and the contacts sync showed my 680 contacts I just started to enter to the device. but the previous contact information did not sync to this username.
I uninstalled the program and started again and when prompted to choose a username I chose a new "raydeeo" username, without the third "e" and got the same message. I chose to abort the sync and checked the log and it said "Hot Sync Error: An aplication cancelled sycronazation or failed to respond to a Hot Sync notification. Please ensure that you are not currently editing data using applications such as Palm OS desktop of Install tool(???)
Hot sync Operation Completed 10/18/072031".
I now show A Palm Desktop Icon with that contains the "PALM" username and no contact information of course because I aborted the sync process I suppose.
My question is, how do I change the device username to correspond with the desktop username I choose? If I choose a previously used username, will the data from the first Treo show on the P.C. along with the new 680 stuff?
This username stuff seems to elude me and drives me crazy...can anyone make some suggestions?
Thanks,
raydeeo
Tom

Ok..whew..long post. Just to clarify, does either of the user names contain all the info you wish to sync?

Actually, I just began to put contact info in the new phone and I suppose some of the contacts are outdated in the previous phone's list. Would you suggest a hard reset and begin again or is there some other solution. Thanks for your comeback.

Well, if your previous username has most of the contacts you need, then yes a hard reset would help. Reset your phone, then sync to your old user name. The new contacts you entered will just have to be re-entered, or copied from the other user name.

That's kinda what I was afraid of. Starting from scratch probably would be my best bet for all of my issues. I still have the "701" issue as well so I'll start over and hope for the best.
Thanks for your help. I may be back.
