Newbie with questions on syncing and Palm Desktop

I'm new to the Palm phones and syncing. I loaded the Palm Desktop and was able to transfer some info from that to my Palm 680. Now, when I sync it again, how can I sync it so that it only adds any new info I've added? Basically, I don't want to lose any info that's already there or add something that I don't want.

Also, when Palm Desktop starts, it asks me if I want to make this my default program for VCard (or something similar). I don't know what a VCard is. How should I answer this question?

Thanks for any advice.

hi johnnie -

If you don't use vcard, then say no.

The point of synchronizing is to make both your palm device and your desktop have the same information. Once you've done that initial syncronization, (which it sounds like you have) then only updates will be made. For example, if you add an appointment to your calendar on your desktop, then sync, it will be added to your palm. If you change that appointment on your palm then sync, the change will be made on your desktop.

Hope that helps

That definitely helps and makes sense.

How do I go about loading this new update for my 680? It sounds like it has to be synced too, but I'm not sure how. Does that go through Desktop or some other way?

Also, I've read about programs that you download that allows mp3s to play as ringtones. I'd like to add 2-3 short mp3 ringtones to my phone. Would this be downloaded the same was as the 680 update or is this different? I'm not using a SD card now, but if it would help I have one that I could use.

Thanks again.

Follow the directions on the Palm website to a "t". This is way different than simply synching, as it is actually updating the ROM. As for your mp3 ringtones, check out this post on the blog. When you load them onto your phone, its usually much quicker to use an SD card reader. Then just pop the card in your phone, and edit away.

Do you have a link to the exact place on the Palm website that I need to read first? I'm not familiar with looking it up and want to be 100% sure I don't mess something up. Thanks for the other link to the blog on ringtones here.

Thanks again for that link. I'll read it next. While reading the link on mini tones you just gave me, I discovered that CBR mp3s will work with Treos and VBR mp3s won't. How do I make sure my mp3 is a CBR and how do I convert it to that if I need to?

Also, someone suggested that the mp3 ringtones be created in mono instead of stereo. Again, how do I do this?

Thanks for your help. I'm learning things I need to know!

We'll keep the ringtone's questions in the other thread, and you can read my response here.

Do I download the following to my Treo first before adding mini tones?

Download: Treo680ATTDesktopUpdater.zip (18.1MB zip file)

I'd do the update first, then add Minitones.
