Treo 680 + old version Palm Desktop / Pocket Mirror - compatibility issues?

I just recently upgraded from Treo 600 to Treo 680.

I used older versions of Palm Desktop (4.1.0) and Pocket Mirror (3.1.6.0) to synch my Treo 600 with MS Outlook in my work laptop. The good thing is that those specific versions of Palm Desktop and Pocket Mirror are included in the list of accredited software by our corporate IT.

Now, I have not tried synch'ing my new Treo 680 with my work laptop because it says in the manual not to synch the Treo 680 with previous or older versions of Palm Desktop (and Pocket Mirror?).

My questions are:

1. Has anyone tried synch'ing the Treo 680 with previous versions of Palm Desktop and Pocket Mirror? Have you experienced any issues?

2. Is there are workaround or solution to this problem? Is there a way i could still synch my Treo 680 with my MS Outlook info? (Asking and convincing our corporate IT to accredit the newest versions may not be the easiest way to go.)

This is exactly the problem I'm facing. I've tried installing the Palm software that was on the CD that came with my 680, but I still can't get the 680 to synch with my Outlook. Any suggestions?

Solved my own problem, with some help from Palm chat support.

After running HotSynch previously, the log displayed this error message: "Unable to initialize Outlook. To fix this problem, in Outlook open the Help menu and choose Detect and Repair." The message was repeated once for each of the primary Outlook functions (Tasks, Notes, Calendar, Contacts).

I ran Help > Detect and Repair, but the process had no effect. Palm chat support told me to run it again with the MS Office CD in the machine and to then reboot, open Outlook and try to HotSync again.

I followed these instructions and it still didn't work. I simply tried to HotSync again, and this time it worked--I didn't make any configuration changes between the two attempts. It simply started working.

Two additional notes: 1) To get HotSynch to fire at all, I had to create a "Custom" connection: HotSync > Options > Connection Setup > New... > Connect to: PC, Via: Cradle/Cable. Now I see "Custom" under the virtual HotSync button on the Treo screen. Without this configuration, I kept getting a port error when trying to synch, and the HotSync pop-up wasn't even triggered.

2) I also removed and re-installed the Palm Desktop software using the CD that came with my 680.

Update to my last post above: My 680 wasn't connecting to the net, and after trying a number of configuration options (discussed in a thread in the 680 board), AT&T support advised me to try a hard reset.

The reset solved my connectivity problem, and it also wiped out the "Custom" connection I had created in order to circumvent a port error and allow me to HotSync--but now the 680 can HotSync without that Custom connection. I have no idea whether or how the two issues (inability to connect to the net, and port error on HotSync) might be connected, but it appears as though the hard reset solved them both. Baffling, but interesting.
