HotSync Error Message

When I HotSync I receive the following error message:

Failed to backup 1 file(s)

PmTraceDatabase

Protocol Error: Handheld file could not be opened. (4004)

What does this mean? Should I be concerned? What can I do about it?

heres a url to a thread about the error involving a treo 680 and the culprit was trying to use the palm desktop from a zire 71 after switching to the 680 and not uninstalling the Z71 palm desktop and installing the 680 desktop software. Done know if you are experiencing the issue for that reason or not Issue With Hotsync. If that does not help google/bing the error # with your device and see what else comes up. Keep us posted.

No you shouldn't be concerned. I'll make it even easier to look up the solution. Here is my post on the fix:

PMTraceDatabase
Protocol Error
Handheld file could not be opened. (4004)
SYNCERR_FILE_NOT_OPEN
If your Hotsync comes back with messages every time informing you that there were errors, this is usually it. The solution, however, is relatively easy to fix:
1.. Launch FileZ or Resco Explorer and tap on view and edit files
2. Open the internal folder and tap pmtracedatabase and put a check mark next to it
3. Tap details
4. Tap on the "Attrs" tab
5. Uncheck the box next to backup
6. Click Save
7. Sync

Its a common problem with Hotsyncing with Vista and sometimes XP desktops.

thanx for your reply. I have already tried the FileZ but the screens I get do not follow what you have outlined.
When I open File Z I get a screen that has File Name and Size. There is no view or edit option. Under File Name, I can tap on Internal and then on Details and I can see the number of files and the size. There is nothing further that I can at this point.

try a soft reset and then try treo musketeers post again.

You want to tap View and Edit Files,
then tap the arrow next to Internal, and then a list of all your apps should come up. Then follow the rest of the directions. You shouldn't tap "details" until you've actually selected the application.
