![]() | Unlocked 680 and Palm Update 1.12 I have a 680 unlocked but with the Cingular logo and Software: TREO680-1.03-CNG. My carrier is T-Mobile and I wonder if the 1.12 Update is the one to use or should I use 2.11 update or should I mess around with either one at all? I see the admonition..."Unlocked GSM Treo 680 smartphone. If you see an AT&T or Cingular logo on the front of your device, you do not have an Unlocked GSM device. This software will not work on AT&T or Cingular branded devices". I've read about horror stories after the update and would prefer to leave well enough alone if possible. Another question is, are downloads from T-Mobile available to this phone or is that impossible because of the 1.03 CNG software. I guess I just don't understand the "unlocked" thing. How can it be unlocked and yet still have the CNG software. What are the disadvantages to my situation, if any. I simply wanted the Palm OS with the touch screen and didn't have either with my DASH from T-Mobile (nice phone though). Thanks for any help you can give me by way of explanation to a smartphone dummy. Raydeeo |

![]() | ... Interesting... Perhpas you could consider bringing your Treo into a retail outlet and have THEM perform any update. That way, they're on the hook if your device does the funky-chicken afterwards... Just make sure all your stuff is backed up to your computer first... |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | If its got the Cingular software, then use the Cingular/ATT update. My phone is an unlocked Cingular phone as well (though I usually use an ATT card in it) and it works for me.

![]() ![]() | I've been pondering this update for a month or so now, not wanting screw up a relatively stable 680 for minimal if any improvement. Raydeeo, I'm wary of the 2.11 update. I've unlocked my Cingular branded 1.03 CNG after updating to the 1.09 ROM. Now I'm unsure that this 2.11 update gets me any improvements other than Push. 'Tho the Palm site states 1.09-ATT = Yes Install, same as your 1.03 CNG, I'm spooked by statment the "The software will not work on unlocked GSM devices." I'm not so sure you aren't in the same situation even with a TMobile SIM. Also the 1.12 update states "Do Not Install" for the Treo 680 1.03 CNG. Forgot, I'm also still using an old ATT Wireless SIM, so I curious if you've updated to this 2.11 ROM? Has anyone installed this update on a Cingular/ATT branded 680 that has been subsequently unlocked by ATT or a third party vendor?

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | No, I haven't installed the newest update. Like you, I don't see the point. I already have the "necessary" patches installed in the last firmware update, and I could care less about PTT. As for IM, I already use Mundu, which is by FAR a better solution IMHO.

![]() | Thanks to all of you for the info. I agree that I'll probably forgo the 2.11 install because my 680 works just fine for what I do. I'm not sure what the ROM 1.09 is or does but I figure if it ain't broke...don't break it!! Great suggestion to go to the retailer to perform the update. I may try that at some point... I suppose we're talking about a Cingular retailer rather than a T-Mobile retailer. All I get from them is "We don't support the 680". Is my only option for add ons and software stuff a third party vendor and, if so, are there some that are better than others for ringtone options etc. Thanks again. |

![]() | Duh...I just saw that the ROM 1.09 is the ATT software package that compares to my CNG 1.03. Someday I'll get this stuff. I'm still interested in where to find software packages that will work with my unlocked unit. |

![]() | Great question forgot! I primarily use it for my only phone but I have all my addresses and phone #'s in it as well. I have had the internet service up to last month but think I'll add it again. I'd love to use it to the fullest extent but probably don't know enough about what's available to me. I'm not a game player at all but want to be able to access all that's there on the 680 the easiest way possible. How limited am I because I chose to buy an unlocked CingularTreo to work with my T-Mobile service? I suspect that Palm software is where to go to get many of the goodies that will make it work to it's potential? If you have any suggestions as to what you've found works for you, I'd be happy to hear about them. Thanks for the most important question. |

![]() ![]() | There's an amazing number of third party apps available, many of which have a trial version to "test drive". I highly recommend doing just that before buying in order to test not only the app's compatibility with other apps on your Treo but how much you're really going to use it. Utilities like Phone Technician, a BackUp app, Mini Tones, and a Launcher app are must haves IMO. Pocket Quicken tracks my daily debit cards charges, and none of these apps care what phone service you're using. If you decide to add a data plan, just make sure you've got above average reception in your area, I prefer SnapperMail for email.
