Need an email client, HELP!

looking for input on a good (flexible) email client for the treo 680. I'm a new user just switching over from a corporate blackberry. Cingular is my service provider and the versamail is giving me problems. I cannot set it up at work because I am behind the firewall and the settings don't work. this may not be an issue if I try again from home.

Cingular is promoting a new email service called XpressMail but it costs an additional $5/month and seems to rely on some PC based app you have to run and doesn't seem to support multiple email accounts.

Poking around here I've read about Chattermail and SnapperMail. How do these two clients stack up? Are there others i should look at?

thanks

They are the main two email clients for the treo Both offer free trial versions so it's probably worth downloading them, having a play and seeing which best suites your needs

I've never used Chattermail, but after demo-ing SnapperMail I looked no further. It can do it all, IMAP, Yahoo, POP3, no limits, and download as much of your email as you want, attachments, whatever. Definitely check it out.

i've been messing around with versamail, chattermail and snappermail all day.

Versamail comes with the cingular config as seems to be working now. I'm having problems with our email server at work which is using a specific port on the firewall but that is happening in all three clients. home isp is working although is harder to send through them now due to relaying restrictions.

Chattermail seems to be most functional although it's causing my brand new treos 680 to crash periodically. I'm not seeing a pattern when the crashes occur.

Snappermail seems OK but the visual displays are not very appealing. the inbox layout is a lot harder to read as compared to the other two.

we'll how they fare over the weekend.

Try sending via your carriers mail server

Probably worth mentioning it to Marc on the official forum, he's quite responsive to fixing problems

the crashing seemed to be related to having versamail, chattermail and snapper all loaded and running at the same time. Snappermail was deleted first but I still had a few crashes (auto reboots) then I ended up deleting chattermail today and settled on versamail. no crashed today but still dealing with the idiosyncrasies of my mail servers.

bmackrell, how did you get versamail to work? I have not been able to get any of the clients you mention to recieve email from my company's server. I keep getting ssl errors. My company uses MS Exchange Server 2003. I have very limited IT support. I just don't understand why I can't enter the same information on my Treo 680 that I use for my Macintosh and PC to retrieve IMAP email.

After deleting the other two (3rd party mail clients) I started getting reliable operations and NO Crashes. I'm assuming they were conflicting with each other. made it really tough to make a purchasing decision.

Versamail seems to have all the settings to pop and send mail through corp and commercial servers, assuming your server allows access and or using authentication. Right now I'm using it to communicate with our work email server (Linux), webmail at a hosted site (1 and 1), Gmail (google) and my home accounts on adelphia (now comcast). I will say that adelphia would not allow relaying through the server, even with authentication, which was a problem. Comcast however does let you send through.

Not sure what I did to make it work.

I have noticed that regularly pinging the servers is not as simply or smooth as my blackberry. There is a wacky schedule you must setup in versamail.

Thanks for the info. I'm glad it's working for you.

I finally had to give up and return my Treo. I believe the issue for my work email is how our server handles ssl certificates. The folks who maintain our server wanted to charge way more than I could afford to make a change on their end. Since I would be the only Treo on the system, it didn't make sense to spend that kind of money.

Along the way I found that if Palm had left BIS (Blackberry Internet Support) in Blackberry Connect, I could have used that. Now, you have to have to use BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server). It's just sad that Palm can't get it together enough so that all anyone has to do is put the same information on their Treo as on their computer and have it work.
