Palms Offers Google Maps With My Location Feature For Centro Users - Treo Forum

Along with the news of the availability of the unlocked Centro, Palm has also announced that Google Maps with the My Location feature will be released. The caveat to that is that it seems it will only be for Centro users.

Seriously? Do the rest of us not count? That said, we'll have to wait until tomorrow to see if we can port it over to our Treo's as well. I'll let y'all know how I fair some time tomorrow. Let me know what you think.

You can get the newest version of Google maps on the Treos too. Don't ask me why Palm mentions only the Centro in the PR

Yes you can, but not the version that has the My Location feature. Its been rumored for a little while that Palm and Google were going to release an updated version with this feature enabled, but that for some reason it would only be available for Centro owners.

My understanding, which of course is not infallible, is that the Centro is the only Palm OS device equipped with the chip for My Location.

My understanding (probably a lot more fallible than yours) is that the Centro contains exactly the same microprocessor configuration as the 680 (in the Centro's GSM config, of course).
Clarify this, please.

P.S. ------ With TomTom or Garmin, is this fact important?

Its been a while. Not sure if its a chip or what. I just remember Colligan coming out with some statement that the Centro had built-in hardware to allow for My Location whereas the other Palm OS phones didn't.

So, what it boils down to is a difference in the API. This could be fixed by a ROM update to the other devices, but I doubt this will happen.

Though I havent tried it but did you guys know that there is a 3rd party My Location addin for Google Maps that supports Treo 650, 680?
