WSJ Article: Palm on a Slippery Slope?

Somebody asked a question of Walter Mossberg in today’s Wall Street Journal. It was basically, what do you see as the future of the Treo, is Palm’s future uncertain? “I wonder if you think the Treo is on a slippery slope down, while the Apple iPhone will likely improve.” Mossberg replied that that Palm has allowed it’s software to stagnate, but there are some positive signs at Palm, like the Centro. Also, (and here’s the good part) The company is “receiving an influx of funds and outside talent from a group of investors with experience at Apple, among other places”. Evidently, Palm has an undertaking in process, the outcome of which we won’t see for some time involving an entirely new operating system. He says the iPhone has raised the bar, but, other smartphone companies will match it, and Apple will have to hustle to stay in the lead. So guys, there is the latest from WSJ

Yes you are right LotusLord, it isn't new news. It is old news. But there it is anyway.

I guess the question is what Palm is going to do and is doing with all this support...

Existing Treo/Centro owners could do with an greatly improved OS and developers could do with some well written and thoughtful development and UI guidelines coupled with a more rigorous technical requirements checklist.

All that has to start at home though, with Palm's own software leading the way.

Future Palm owners? Well...there's enough opinion been given on that one already...

I think what Palm needs to do is offer the an upgrade (either hardware or preferably software) for existing Treo and Centro users (perhaps excluding the 700p which has now been practically phased out) to the new version of the Palm OS.

Yeah, but with the latest forcast putting the OS out in mid 2009 I don't see them doing that. Would be nice though...
