![]() | What will make you buy a new smartphone? After reading Andrew's 800w Preview I started to ponder what it was going to take to upgrade my Treo 700p. I'm not fond of the missing keyboard on the iPhone and dislike the Blackberry monthly premium pricing and missing Palm apps. I do like the Centro (two in the family), but don't see it as a 'must have' upgrade (side-grade) to my current Treo. What will make you buy your next device? (I'm attaching a 'poll' above -- only select the minimum that it will take for you to buy a new device.) Last edited by RichC; 07-09-2008 at 03:32 PM. |

![]() | I went for 2, 3,4,5,6,7,8,9 the others are important, but I wouldn't nesessarily not buy another phone without them. Palm may not exist much longer without them though. Quick explanations? 1. Like the current palm OS, but it does need an upgrade, and many people are leaving palm because of this. Still, not needed for me. 2.The reason I went for a centro over a 755, even though the screen size and keyboard are a killer 3.don't think this needs an explanation. as good as palm is, what good is a smartphone if you cant do two things at once...? 4.Not really a nesessitiy for most people, but WiFi is almsot everywhere now. Why suffer through slow "BROADBAND" phone data services, when you can connect to true broadband. Heck, my Sirius sat radio can connect with WiFi.. get your head out your butt palm. 5.For me, this isn't a huge deal breaker. The camera cuts the mustard.. barley.. for what I use it for. with that said, I wouldn't choose another palm phone with a 1.3mp camera when I can get other smart phones with 2+ now a days.. Why buy old technology? 6.Without a touchscreen AND a QWERTY keyboard, there are better options IMHO. 7.As horrible as sprint customer service is, that is not palms fault. Palms CS could be better, but they are selling goods to a carrier. In my opinion, its the carriers fault if there is a problem they can't fix, not palms, and its not palms duty to help the carrier every 2 seconds. if you don't like your carrier, switch.. 8.Again, email barley cuts the mustard. I don't email every 2 seconds like some people though, so its ok for me. I use VersaMail for Gmail and Sprint mobile email for hotmail. the versa mail I really like (and I hear chattermail is incredible), the sprint mobile email is a joke. Again, not palms fault. If I had a real email account, and could strictly use versamail, I would be happy. Emails are quick and easy enough for me unless I am in sprint email garbage app. 9. I could go on and on about this one, but most of you already are aware I am sure. While blazer loads webpages with decent stability, thats about all it does well. That, and the JAVA support is a joke. With the internet being as large as it is now, web browsing really should be a priority for palm. 10.Again, just another cause of why buy old technology. While the current bluetooth doesn't bother me too much (minus the pairing randomly droping on almost every palm phone I have used), I don't see the point in buying something without stereo bluetooth now a days. Why buy a 1mhz computer when you can get a 2.5mhz for the same price? And I will add one GPS. Come on palm. Get your head out of your butt and stop making us carry bluetooth recievers. Heres a hint, your bluetooth pairing has issues!! JUST ACTIVATE/ADD THE STUPID CHIP! ![]() |

![]() ![]() ![]() | I selected all but " carrier issues resolved". The reason, Sprints 755 hasn't bothered me at all. Very stable, but everything else is a must for me to fork out another 200-400 bones for another phone. Not to mention that new accessories will be needed if they go to the mini usb connector. I have many accessories for my Treo that will take time to replace, financially. So, an adapter? |

For me its simple since really I only use my Treo 'productively' for a few things. Improve on these and I'm ready to upgrade. Extras are a bonus. First it needs to be a pocket-able high quality phone with a stable bluetooth headset -- close with the Jawbone, but stable it is not. A plus would be that all audio (ie. MP3, Slingplayer, Kinoma, etc) would work with this bluetooth device. Second, the display needs to be readable in all light and not power hungry. A slicker, thin modern display needs to start showing up, but a dedicated keyboard is a necessity IMHO. Third, its my database ... the Palm OS is fine except for multitasking and security features. (I'd prefer a finger print reader or something -- perhaps holding the phone authorizes user?) Fourth, merging text messages and email would be helpful. I use text regularly for instant communication with office and family, but can see a benefit in only using one client to handle text and email -- email that I authorize receiving (PUSH based) on my phone. Datebook is sort of a given, but it would be nice to have it interfaced with an online version with hot links to my database automatically (ie. recognize client name and hot link). I personally wouldn't mind an extended reminder set up for everything from VM to alarms ... sometimes I need that second notice. ![]() As for my personal (non-necessary) desire ... I'd like a better quality camera. I do enjoy being able to take a photo of a document (macro), whiteboard presentation (often low light) or just a personal photo to be printed for a photo album in decent quality. | |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Rich, We need to get together one day and do lunch. Great survey and thoughts by all. I recently completed Financial Peace University with Dave Ramsey. A new phone will only come if 1) the 755p breaks; 2) I get a free upgrade (which Sprint has already offered me); 3) the new phone is somehow truly more necessary/cost effective than the present one. My new motto is Act Your Wage. Stu |
