Sprint Instinct vs. Treo

I see a lot of talk about the iPhone out there, but I haven't seen much about the new Sprint Instinct. I have a Treo 755p, and I love it. I have used Treos (650, 700) for years now, for both heavy business and personal reasons. But I have been checking out the Instinct, and this thing is awesome: GPS, navigation, huge screen, voice command, 2.0 MP camera, thin, stereo Bluetooth, various very cool features, etc. But the one thing I thought I might miss is the qwerty hard-key keyboard. However, I just finished playing with an Instinct, and it turns out there is a full qwerty touchscreen keyboard that actually does a very good job.

So, what are the thoughts of the heavy Treo users out there? I know the 800w is on the way, but is the Instinct finally a serious Treo competitor? The Treo will certainly never get the screen size of the Instinct.

Check out the Sprint link:

looks just like an iphone, really. critics say 'treos will never have a screen like that' but we know phones like that will never have a true keyboard.

Like Brandon I see the Samsung Instinct as more of a competitor to the iPhone than the Treo, which might be a clever move on Sprint's part as their currently isn't a CDMA iPhone

I have used my friends iphone and an instinct when I was at a sprint store. I still prefer the palm. Yeah garnet is outdated and the other phones have fancy touch screen keyboards, but I like the standard keyboard. I thought it was strange typing on that keyboard. I have an ipod touch which is like an iphone, does everything but place calls, and i dread using the keyboard if i use the internet if im in a wifi area. But you have to do what makes you happy, hopefully happy in the long run not for just a few months when the novelty wears off.

Red face

Though the Samsung Instinct looks cool, I still prefer a phone with a physical keyboard like Treo. One offering that is very tempting is the Samsung i780.

I "upgraded" to the Instinct

and oh how I miss my slumming days with my treo 650. The new samsung phone should be called the Itstinks or the I-stink. I hate it. Can't wait to go back and thank God for the 30 day "trial" period; it's been filled w trial and tribulations. It's definately not a smart phone; it is a dumbphone

I had hopes for this phone..ive been waiting for the new Palm/Linux thing to come out and hoped the SI would serve my needs. It doesn't--not by a long shot.

1) the browser is basically unusable unless it's a mobile site. You know the treo's optimized internet that makes everything accessible? Yeah, well..goodbye internet..I don't even waste time with the Internet on the SI.
2) Calendar is a joke..doesn't sync..useless unless your a 4th grader...
3) Notes/memos? limited to about 300 characters...
4) No docs, no pdf, no excel..no nothin'
5) the virtual keyboard aint that bad...but its not precise or i got fat fingers..or something..but i can live w it..even tho the layout needs to improve..
6) no cut and paste..terrible...if i have a number in my contacts that i want to send to someone else..well..i have to look it up, write it down, and then..u get the point..can no longer just cut and paste and txt...
7) the on/off is miserable in a way you can only hate if you have one of these things
8) doesnt save pages on the web for reading offline
9) the gps is all this phone is good for...
10) the music app takes forever to load.ever.single.time.
11) it freezes like my treo, but my treo rocks..
12) visual vm is cool
13) no date/time stamp on txts.
14) no aim app
15) can't just silence it..have to contort urself
16) some good things: like the movies list (tells you whats going on where) or weather..
17) it's cute..looks good..big screen...

I'm sending it back..using my treo..waiting for the upgraded treo palm/linux thing to come out later this year...

peace..

i think you make some great points, but let's all take a step back here... neither the instinct nor the iphone are aimed at business users. the treo is. so it doesn't sync with your calendar? so what? most consumers don't need that function aside from simple reminders every once in a while. some of your points are valid, and i agree the system and software needs some massaging, and that will come (it's only a few weeks old) but for those of us whoe are either long time sprint customers, or live in a bad at&t area, or both, and don't want to lug a brick of a smartphone around, this is a great alternative. if i needed office/pdf/excel support, i'd get a blackberry, a deal with it, but i need a phone, that can do some other stuff too. i had a treo and a centro for a few years, and i never found myself using most of the applications or anything, so i won't look back.

Plus, the Treo stylus is unscrewable at both ends, enabling the shooting of spitballs so tiny that it is impossible to determine the point of origin.

rstoss4..... the phone is so different from a Treo that I was wondering why you purchased it.
The Instinct is probably an excellent device for lots of folks who want that type of useage, but it is a very different device from a Treo.

Reading on other forums it appears the Instinct has a high return rate due to people being underwhelmed by the device

I don't doubt that one bit. I was trying to be gentle to the Instinct people (when, in fact, I'm pretty militant about the Treo) and so was attempting to provide another point of view. Since I know that I would have to be an extreme left-wing liberal to believe that there actually is another point of view on this subject, I concede that my post was a bit of a stretch.
