treo airtime charge question

I just purchased a treo755 using Sprint as my service provider. When you connect to the web using the phone a little indicatior in the upper right hand corner of the phone above the signal strength indicator goes on and stays on until you turn off the phone and restart it. My question is are you being charged with airtime the entire time this indicator is on and if so is there a way of disconnecting from the web without turning the phone off and restarting it?
Thanks.
Fred

Welcome to Treonauts, fdalauro!!!!!!!! No, I think data usage is based on actual usage of the internet, rather then merely being connected. However, there are a number of progams, even in ROM that will access the internet (e.g. the World Clock), and those charges can accumulate. Two recommendations I would make are 1) check your usage on your Sprint page and 2) consider an unlimited data option, then you don't have to worry about it. If you are still in the first 30 days of your contract, you might also consider a SERO plan (go to SprintUsers.com and look for the SERO thread and just read the last couple of pages and post for help). SprintUsers is an excellent source of help with various Sprint issues as well.

Welcome to the forum, Fred! As far as a built-in network disconnect on Treo, no, but two 3rd party programs will allow you to disconnect the network connection whenever you need to:

NetworkDown (freeware) - I've never used this, but many here use it and sing its praises. (I hope that link works)

Power Hero - not free, but a personal must-have for me. It will let you not only turn off the network at will, but schedule it to turn off after so many minutes of inactivity. It also has many other battery-saving features with regard to bluetooth, keyboard lights, phone... Well worth buying, but has a free (full-featured) trial.

jstant is right about those two apps. Often, however, if you use them to close the network, the device will then just reconnect. What I find useful about these apps (and I've used both) is that they speed the disconnect from the actual net usage (which therefore saves you data time). Quite often it takes a few moments even though you've moved on to another function, for the net connection to close. Going to either of these apps, makes the disconnect instantaneous when you disconnect. In addition to data usage time, these apps are also good in preserving your battery as the battery usage becomes much more rapid with active use of the web.
