Upgrade to 680 using another line under same family plan

Long time Clie user here and I've been thinking about getting a Treo 680. I'm on a family plan (there are 4 lines in the account) and 2 of them are eligible for upgrade. Since I got a Sony Ericsson phone toward end of '06 with AT&T & not eligible for another upgrade until 6/08, can I upgrade one of the two lines to get a 680?

First off, welcome to Treonauts.

Disclaimer: I am not a cell phone salesman, nor have I ever been...

With that said, I believe that you are able to do that, since AT&T phones are GSM, you should be able to just switch the SIM Cards (from your relatives to yours) and you should be in business (you may have to wait a day or two). Hopefully someone else will be able to give you more information. If not, I am sure that you can ask your salesman. Just tell them the situation, I dont think that they would care. What does everyone else think?

Actually a month ago I was told by one Cingular sales person that since 680 uses a different SIM card, I either need to wait for end of my contract or pay full price for the phone if I do not wish to wait. Can anyone verify this?

That is absolutely incorrect. A SIM is the same regardless of the phone. Switching the SIM out will move your number to that phone immediately, as long as they are Cingular or at&t branded. Now there have been some issues with the 680 not liking some SIMs, but I believe that has been corrected.

They were the same physically, just software locked them into the iPhone.

Guess that sales person just doesn't know better. The 680 will arrive tomorrow. I can't wait!
