Smile Newbie Question: which Treo?

My wife had a Treo 600 (that died of course) and she loved it. She used many of the PDA features and found it very useful.

Since we are both in the market for new phones, we are looking to get two Treo's and a family plan...but since so much has changed since the Treo 600, we are kind of at a loss as to which Treo model to get..

Amazon reviews (while usually very useful) are not that helpful as there seems to be as many haters of any given model as thier are lovers of the same model. Plus it appears that Treo Quality Assurance can be spotty and more than the normal (few) defective units are getting through.

Smartphone vs Windows vs Palm OS?
650 vs 680 vs 700 vs 750?

Slim model vs thicker model?

So many questions and options.

We do plan to go through Sprint if possible since thier coverage here is about the best of all the carriers.

Does anyone have any insights as to which model (and why) they would recommend for us?

We were initially planning to go with the 700p to get a the full OS (as opposed to a smartphone limited OS) as well as the few "palm" enhancements (mu wife's 600 was a palm deives, so I fuigured the 700p might ease her transition is MS).

However, the 700p is certainly not the cheapest, nor is it the smallest of the litter. I also see alot of veterans using the 680, and it makes me wonder if the 680 is special for some reason.

Any and all help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

There is going to be a new Palm OS Treo, called the 755p on Sprint pretty soon. This is going to be the same form factor as the Treo 680 and 750, but CDMA which is the type of phone that Sprint and Verizon use. It's still Palm OS, which it sounds like you're more comfortable with.

If you want to stick with Sprint you're stuck with the 700p or 700 W|X for the time being, as the 680 and 750 are GSM only, which means Cingular or T-Mobile. I've been seeing a lot of complaints about the 700 series on this board lately, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad device, but if you can wait for the 755, I personally would. It is going to be fairly difficult to get a 650 now that they have been discontinued, and there really is no reason to go with what is now an old model.

Take a look here at the 755p

new to the forum, but I'm a long-time Palm OS (Palm Pilot Pro) guy too. I am interested in replacing my 650. From several posts I have seen, it sounds like the 680 is a good choice. I plan to switch from verizon to cingular, so I have the option to get the 750.

what do you palm OS guys that went with the 750 think? would you prefer a palm OS device still?

I am thinking the 680 would be a nice upgrade to my 650, until the new linux based phones start showing up.

any thoughts?

Hardware wise the 750 is great but Windows Mobile isn't as nice to use as PalmOS, everything seems more long winded and less intuitive

I switched from a 650, to a 680 for a few days, because my local cingular stores were out of the 750. I wanted WiFi capabilities, so I switched.

I personally like the 750 a little better right now. I'm reasonably familiar with WM, as some of our salespeople use Intermec portables for placing orders. I also like Palm OS because it is more simplistic, but still powerful. I feel that Pocket IE renders pages more correctly than Blazer. I should say though that I'm not an extremely heavy user.

If it were me ... I'd sit a few more weeks ... months ... and look at the 755p. It should have the goodies that smartphone users love in a more compact size. I'm somewhat concerned about battery life and whether the bluetooth connectivity has been improved. If it is not better than the 700p for bluetooth, I'll be disappointed.

On the otherhand, if price is keeping you from the 700p -- then I'm sure you are not going to like the 755p either? There might be some good buys on 700p the month Sprint introduces the new model???

Can't go with Sprint. I'm limited to Cingular and Verizon for coverage reasons.
so the 755p will not be a choice for me for a while i'm guessing. As I mentioned, I think I'll be happy with the 680. I like my 650 from a usability standpoint, so the form factor and other new stuff on the 680 may be enough for me for now.
I have not used WM, so I don't know if it offers better capabilities or not.
Also, I can get a 680 pretty cheap thru work, so that helps too

From Another Newbie

I'm the proud owner of a pre-owned Treo 700p bought on Ebay. I choose the 700p because it runs the Palm OS and I don't like owning the newest software, car, etc. until the bugs are worked out. Microsoft makes very good products but I like to wait until bugs/security issues are addressed until I purchase it. Just my preference.

I arrived at work this morning, called tech support to set up my used 700p running the Palm software and was told that the company only supports Palm handhelds that run Windows Mobile or Blackberry devices. Now I own a 700p that my company won't set up on the corporate server because it has to either run Windows Mobile or be a Blackberry device.

My advice: if you are going to use a corporate server call the company tech support BEFORE you buy anything and confirm that they will set your Treo up on the corporate server.

I am in the opposite boat and stuck with sprint (though I do hear that the EVDO network is way faster than Cingular's EDGE...if I remember correctly).

Right now with a contract and rebate...I can get the 700p for as low as $199, but I am wondering how bad the price will be on the 755p with contract?

Anyone know what the carriers ussually charge for the latest model with contract (when they have come out in the past).

Also, Has anyone ever gotten the SERO program and/or a corporate discount for working for a large company? If so, please post (or PM) me the details so I can perhaps figure out a way to sweeten my deal a bit.

Thanks,

Q

EVDO is faster than Edge, but Cingular's HSDPA is as fast or faster than EVDO.

I would assume that the 755p will be around the same price as the 700p, but maybe another 50-100 dollars.
