Can I be a moderator and help improve this forum...

Which has been growing at a very rapid rate? I would like the ability to remove spam and not just report it and help improve the forum in general by controlling the various rants and removing certain posts that could cause some sort of disruption and ingeneral improve the forum.

I can improve this already great froum.

Sounds like a speech doesn't it?

while we appreciate your offer of help, there's a bit more to being a moderator that just deleting spam. i can personally assure you that spam does not remain on the boards long because as soon as i see it, it is deleted and the original poster is banned for life. the same path is taken by the other moderators as well. spam is not something we take lightly on the forums. being a moderator is more of a 'don't call us, we'll call you' kind of gig. i've never seen someone actually given moderator status by simply asking for it, and that goes for this forum and all the others with which i've been associated. one must show by one's actions that one can be helpful and objective to others' difficulties. in closing, please don't be offended by this, and please continue to enjoy the forum.

I agree with Brandon, I am a moderator on a different site (a high school sports forum), and it is much more than just deleting spam...

A little advice for next time, csmelosky, you may want send a Private Message.

This brings back memories. I requested the same thing a little over a year ago at a site and was scoffed at.

Now I'm an Admin on their competiter site and they're kicking themselves in the buttocks.

Don't worry about it csmelosky. You just keep being a great member and when the time is right, they'll come to you. Good request though.

Optimus Centro out.

I appreciate your request csmelosky and understand your desire to help out, it's annoying isn't it when some people chime in simply to make someone feel stupid - I feel bad for the person asking the original question regardless of whether they searched or not.

On the spam side I get the sense it doesn't stay for very long as all the mods have a zero tolerance approach to that stuff... even the sophisticated having-a-conversation-about-a-product-between-two-bogus-accounts kind of spam ends up having the entire thread killed even if innocent members contributed. Though we always like to give things a chance if its not immediately apparent it's spam.

As for our visitors, it's always a tough call to edit out someones post, most times we try not to but instead respond appropriately to the original question - a quiet PM might be sent to the offensive author. Very very very rarely have we had to action against against a medium/long term member and I think thats a tribute to the community as a whole that we have and the atmosphere within the threads.

Back to your request though, it might have been better made via PM to one of the mods or me rather then here as Optimus said. I was tempted to move it because it's better held via PM but I don't think its bad, we're saying no for now thats all...and we're also saying it's ok to ask, no ones going to laugh and we take it seriously.

I hope this doesn't discourage you, you've been a very active member I certainly appreciate some of the light hearted posts you've made even if, at times, I'm left scratching my head (whilst smiling of course) as well as the help you've given everybody.

Regards,

~ Steph

@Optimus, were you really scoffed at? It's weird how some boards I've been on are more like high school playgrounds with the same cliques and clubs of users going around terrorizing visitors.

Yes. I found it rather interesting. You are absolutely correct in that it was a clique and they didn't want me to play on their swings. The interesting part (to me) was how a handful of the Mods would comment on how much work and effort it was to Mod the forum. I started a thread w/ an inquiry about the process to become a Mod and the responses were along the lines of "who are you to try to become a Mod here". ....as if I wasn't worthy.

I just laugh at their inferior Mods with their prehistoric forum software from 10,000 BC. It was a blessing in disguise because I'm a bit of a neat freak so I would have been putting threads in their proper forums for years.

Optimus Centro out.
