supertramp is on a distinguished road
(Un?)official intro thread

Hi all,
By way of an introduction, here's my first post in this forum:

Id = supertramp (best album - Crisis? What crisis?)
Treo = 680
Other PDA = Palm T3
Other phones = Nokia N70, Nokia 6310i

I got the 680 because I was comfortable with the Palm OS, and trust the stability. However, I'm hearing some good stuff about HTCs (Windows OS), and the newer Nokias (Symbian OS) are apparently pretty stable nowadays, and offer loads of functionality...
...and I have a couple of gripes about the 680. Perhaps other contributers have some input or advice to help me.

Gripe 1. I would like some better multitasking, so that while I'm on the phone I can do a lookup of a name or get info from a memo and read it to the person I'm calling. Is this possible using my 680? I don't think so.

Gripe 2: doing a device "find" to look for a string in all data areas takes FAR longer on the Treo 680 than my Palm T3. Are there any tricks or better software that can speed up this much-used function?

Thanks for your help, and brownie points to all who made/make this forum available.

Hey supertramp, welcome to the forum! I moved your thread to the Off Topic area for introductions (more people will see you here )

1) Yes! Your CAN use your Treo to look up other information while on a call. Just hit the home button to take you to your applications screen, then choose which ever one you want to get info from. You'll still be on your call!

2) Hmmm..I don't know of any third party software to speed up the find function. Searching with my 680 doesn't take long, its about the same speed as my previous Palm's. Anyone else?

Thanks forgot (interesting user-id, mind if we just call you "Bruce"? ),

Regarding Gripe1, I've just tried it again, an indeed, I CAN do other stuff during a call... I must have had some other line problem or somesuch the last time I tried. Thanks for the info.

Regarding "Find" function, I've just tried a search for "John" on my 680 and on my T3 (similar contact content, approx 2000 entries), and the results are:

Treo 680 approx. 20 seconds (for "contact" part of "Find")
Palm T3 approx. 3 seconds (for "contact" part of "Find").

Is it just the processor?
Treo 680 (312Mhz)
Palm T3 (400Mhz)

I suspect that the "Find" algorithm is written differently, or the data is stored more inefficiently on the Treo. Perhaps there's a "storage-tidy-up" function that I can download... all suggestions gratefully accepted.

Uhh...no..but thanks.

Reguarding the search, have you tried any resets to see if you can get things running a little smoother? Search times like yours arn't normal. That said...you don't have like 5,000 contacts or something do you?
